Origin / Who We Are

More Than a Financial Institution

CSCU was founded in 1954 by 55 employees of the Texas Prison System who pooled together just over $10,000 to create something the big banks could not offer: a financial cooperative built on trust, fairness, and shared purpose. Seventy years later, that founding spirit still drives every decision we make.

As a not-for-profit cooperative, every dollar we earn goes back to our members, through lower loan rates, fewer fees, higher savings dividends, and better service. We do not answer to shareholders. We answer to you.

Community Spotlight

What We Do in Our Community

From financial literacy to local sponsorships, CSCU puts its resources where it matters most, right here in our community.

  • Annual Backpack Drive

    • In 2025, CSCU gave out over 500 backpacks and school supplies.

    • In 2026, CSCU will give 500 backpacks with a mini hygiene kit.

  • Voted best CU for 2026

  • 2025 Angel tree

  • Through CSCU’s holiday skip-a-pay program, we donated over $11,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County in 2025.

Supporting Local Schools and Youth

The next generation of Walker County leaders is growing up right here. CSCU actively supports local schools and youth programs because we believe that a well-educated, financially prepared community is a stronger community.

Community Events and Sponsorships

Whether it is a local fundraiser, a county fair, or a neighborhood event, CSCU shows up. Our team participates in and sponsors activities throughout Huntsville and the surrounding counties because this is our home too, and we are invested in seeing it thrive. Financial Education for Our Members

Financial wellness does not happen by accident. CSCU offers free educational resources through our GreenPath Parntership. In our Financial Wellness Center, we offer library courses covering topics such as budgeting, credit building, home buying, retirement planning, and fraud prevention. Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we can give our community.

Mission Pull Quote

We were born from community. And everything we do — from the tools we offer to the way we treat our members — is still driven by that same sense of togetherness.
